In New York City Fringe 2026, Lunatic was awarded with the “Spirit Of The Fridge” Press Award.
“Lunatic” is a surrealist, solo show epitomising the weird and nonsensical aspects of society and even life, as a whole.
Can I say with 100% certainty that I fully understand “Lunatic”? No, I cannot. For lack of a better word, it was lunacy. Truthfully, I cannot think of a better word to describe life itself than lunacy, though. And if life is lunacy, I suppose that makes the people the lunatics.
Lunatic, written by Elina & Arseniy Kaplun, is a masterclass in movement, storytelling, and baring your soul on stage.
Why was I crying at the end over something I didn’t quite understand? Because Elina Kaplun is a phenomenal storyteller – believing every word she utters, living in authenticity, and pulling raw emotion from her soul for us to take with us forever.
THAT is what I saw, heard, and experienced: Excellence on stage.
She is fully inside this performance from start to finish, physically precise one moment and completely uncontained the next. Even when the piece feels abstract, her presence keeps it watchable.
It’s not something you follow. It’s something you absorb.
“Elina Kaplun is a bit of a time traveling clown, a poetic explorer and a patchwork of influence - interview by Theresa Buchheister for New York Time Review
